THE CHALLENGE
Common gases such as nitrogen, oxygen and argon are stored in bulk at a common area for distribution to departments throughout the plant. The expense of the gas is charged to general plant overhead. This practice allows the plant to get the bulk quantity discounts from the supplier, but encourages waste by the departments that use the gas.
THE BROOKS SOLUTION
A Brooks i-Series mass flow meter is installed in the feed line to each department. The mass flow meter provides an accurate indication of the gas usage for each department. The Model 0151 power supply/indicator provides power to the mass flow meter and flow rate indication local to the department. The wide 50:1 turndown of all Brooks mass flow meters provides indication even when the gas usage is low. Brooks Models 5860i, 5861i and 5863i provide accurate flow measurement from a few liters a minute to many CFM. The 4-20 mA flow signal can be transmitted across the plant to the office area for individual totalization. The flow total can be used to prorate the gas cost per department. This set-up encourages conservation and the cost savings can offset the cost of the instrumentation and installation. The thermal mass flow operating principle reads directly in standard volumetric flow, which is how gas is sold. This allows the flow total to be used to trigger a refill from the supplier preventing a costly gas shortage. |
