GENERAL PROCESS - REF. #GP005 | View PDF

THE CHALLENGE
Many industrial processes require accurate and repeatable flow control. The success of a company is directly related to its ability to control flow so that production processes are consistent and within the guidelines of the quality control engineers. It is critical that flow instruments be accurate, repeatable, and reliable so that the system flow controllers can do their jobs more effectively.

THE BROOKS SOLUTION
In a typical flow control loop, a flow measuring device such as the Brooks MT3809 metal tube variable area meter sends a 4-20 mA flow signal to a PLC or PID controller. The controller, which has a flow set point established based on process requirements, then sends a 4-20 mA control signal to an IP converter. The resulting pneumatic signal (3-15 psig) is then sent to a valve positioner/actuator to open or close the valve based on the flow set point.

The highly repeatable nature of the MT3809 variable area meter allows the process control engineers to "tune" the flow loop with a minimal amount of time and effort. A Model 8000B site flow indicator on the downstream side of the flowmeter can visually confirm the valve position in addition to giving other clues as to the condition of the process (color, turbidity, clarity, etc.).
