Emerson's Micro Motion® ELITE® flowmeter proven to be world's most accurate Coriolis meter

Verification delivered by robust calibration and ISO 17025 accreditation

Boulder, Colorado (11 April 2003) — What do transportation of oil, and production of cancer medication, air filled shoes and soft drinks have in common? They all require precise, accurate measurement and, therefore, rely on Micro Motion® ELITE® flowmeters from Emerson Process Management. The accuracy for which these meters are known has now been verified as announced today by Emerson. Through its investment and use of gravimetric calibration and its receipt of ISO 17025 accreditation, Emerson's Micro Motion ELITE flowmeter has been shown to be undisputedly the most accurate Coriolis flowmeter in the world.

Accurate, dependable measurement delivered by Micro Motion ELITE flowmeters is critical in numerous industries around the globe.

  • Accurate measurement ensures that only the exact amount of costly ingredients is used. This is especially critical in the life sciences industry where exacting proportions affect the efficacy of drugs.

  • Precise measurement makes certain that products have the same high quality and consistency every time, potentially saving millions of dollars otherwise spent on rework and scrap because the product was not produced consistently.

  • Accurate measurement verifies shipping quantities in custody transfer and eliminates the overpayment or loss of revenue that results from "guesswork."

For applications where dependable accuracy is critical, customers need to know that the accuracy reported on their meter is the accuracy they will receive. Verified accuracy is now available since Emerson has received ISO 17025 competency accreditation for calibration of its Micro Motion Coriolis flowmeters.

"Calibration verifies the reported performance levels and measurement accuracy of instrumentation," explained Tim Patten, director of measurement technology for the Micro Motion division of Emerson Process Management. "Our calibration accreditation by ISO 17025 verifies accuracy by incorporating the quality procedures of ISO 9000, and it goes a step beyond by verifying that the uncertainty claimed for the calibration process of the Coriolis meter is valid and maintained. This rigorous process validates Micro Motion accuracy, and also casts into question the accuracy claims of other Coriolis meters with less thorough calibration methods."

As part of this accreditation process and its ongoing commitment to product excellence, Micro Motion has made a significant investment in an on-site gravimetric calibration stand in Boulder, Colorado. A globally recognized independent third party assured that Micro Motion's mass flow calibrations are traceable to international standards and maintained to the lowest possible uncertainty levels.

Calibration verifies the reported performance levels and measurement accuracy of instrumentation. The calibration process cannot verify the accuracy of a device with 100% certainty. To have confidence in the measurement accuracy of a meter, customers should make sure that the meter has the lowest possible calibration uncertainty percentage. The new Micro Motion calibration stand has a confirmed uncertainty of twelve one hundredths of a percent (0.012%). Customers may also see calibration uncertainty expressed as a ratio. With this ISO 17025 competency accreditation, Micro Motion meters offer an approximately 8:1 accuracy to uncertainty ratio, compared to the approximately 2:1 accuracy to uncertainty ratio used by the other Coriolis manufacturers.

"Verifying measurement accuracy through calibration is a highly scientific process. We're drafting a white paper to make it easier for customers to know what to look for to select the best meter for their accuracy needs," Patten said. "To verify the accuracy claims on a meter, customers should ask:

  • 'How is this meter calibrated?' to understand how the vendor is getting their accuracy number.

  • 'Does the calibration reference meter have a 3-4 times better uncertainty than the meter being tested?' otherwise it's scientifically impossible to verify the accuracy claim.

  • 'Is the calibration process ISO 17025 accredited?' this is a rigorous process that requires the vendor to validate its accuracy claims.

  • 'Is the meter calibration traceable to international standards?' to give the customer confidence in the meters' performance levels."

Unlike other Coriolis providers, Micro Motion Coriolis flowmeters offer further advantages to customers through integration into Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture. The flowmeters deliver device and process information that powers PlantWeb architecture to deliver asset optimization, cost savings, increased plant availability and enhanced safety and environmental compliance.

"Micro Motion has always been the leader in Coriolis solutions. Now we're the leader in calibration of Coriolis, helping our customers understand the accuracy of the meters," Patten said. "We're proud that we've implemented these rigorous processes to prove that the Micro Motion ELITE meter is the most accurate Coriolis meter available. Our customers can depend on Micro Motion for their critical applications."
