Emerson launches the DeltaV™ SIS system as a key component of its new smart SIS — an extension of PlantWeb^® digital plant architecture

DeltaV SIS system innovations simplify customer implementation and operation of safer process plants in accordance with IEC 61511

AUSTIN, TEXAS (June 8, 2004) - Emerson Process Management announces the new DeltaV™ SIS system, the heart of Emerson's new smart safety instrumented system (SIS).  Composed of sixteen-channel modular logic solvers, the DeltaV SIS system can be deployed in distributed fashion to perform programmable electronic system functions for virtually any safety need.

Building on the proven technologies of PlantWeb digital process automation architecture, the new DeltaV SIS system digitally integrates with intelligent safety-certified sensors and final control elements to build Emerson's unique smart SIS solution.

The SIS system is rated for SIL 1-3 safety applications, in compliance with the stringent international standard IEC 61508 for safety functionality, and has been designed to integrate all the tools to fulfill the customer design requirements of the IEC 61511.

To help simplify process manufacturers' compliance efforts with IEC 61511, the SIS system delivers version control and audit trail (VCAT) within the DeltaV SIS system software and AMS™ Suite: Intelligent Device Manager. Changes to the SIS system are recorded, including date, time, author or respective alarm level. Plant Messenger will direct the events with corrective actions to the relevant department by e-mail, text message (SMS), or pager. Plantwide Event Historian will automatically document all the events.

The DeltaV SIS system uses the diagnostics within field devices to increase the availability of the overall smart SIS solution. Scheduled partial-stroking of final control elements will improve the safety level, reduce the number of risky personnel trips into the field, and increase the mandatory proof test interval.

The new, scalable SIS system makes the separation of the safety instrumented system functions from mainstream Basic Process Control System (BPCS) functions absolutely secure per the IEC 61508 standard. Each modular, self-contained SIs system unit has sixteen configurable I/O channels and can be located by the customer where needed to fit the size and distribution of all safety applications.
