Emerson technologist Terry Blevins earns a place in the process automation hall of fameBlevins is recognized for his outstanding technological contributions and ongoing commitment to the process control industry by CONTROL MagazineAUSTIN, TEXAS (March 26, 2004) Emerson Process Management today announced that Terry Blevins, principal technologist for DeltaV product development, has been named to the CONTROL Magazine Process Automation Hall of Fame. Blevins receives this recognition for his significant technological contributions and his ongoing commitment to the process control industry. CONTROL created the Hall of Fame in 2001 to recognize those outstanding industry professionals who have devoted their lives to the advancement and implementation of their craft. Blevins is one of only 12 members inducted to date. "We are proud and pleased that CONTROL has chosen to recognize the accomplishments of Terry Blevins," says John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management. "Terry has moved process automation forward. There are very few people who can leave such a stamp on the industry." Blevins has been actively involved in the application and design of process control systems throughout his career. A 30-year veteran with Emerson, Terry was a chief architect of the PlantWeb digital plant architecture through his product development work on the DeltaV digital automation system. Blevins is currently technology team leader for the development of DeltaV advanced control products and team leader for the development of FOUNDATION fieldbus function block specifications. He is co-author of Advanced Control Unleashed, ISA's best selling book in 2002. Blevins is the holder of 13 U.S. patents and has written more than 40 papers on process control system design and applications. He serves as U.S. expert to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards setting organization. In this capacity he has contributed to an international standard for function blocks within the process industry that will be known as IEC 61804. Blevins holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Louisville and a Master's in electrical engineering from Purdue University. He is a member of U.S. National Committee Technical Advisory Group and the Instrumention, Systems, and Automation Society (ISA). Blevins began his career in 1971 at Western Electric as an advanced manufacturing engineer. In 1974, he joined the Systems Engineering group at Fisher Controls in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he worked on the design and startup of numerous controls projects within the pulp and paper industry. Blevins led the development of application control technology packages for recovery boilers, evaporators, a recausticizing process and the instrumentation of lime kilns. He also developed the algorithm used in Emerson's PROVOX® modified Smith Predictor. In 1984 Blevins became pulp and paper manager for Fisher Controls' Systems Engineering group in Austin, Texas. In 1990 he was team leader for graphical control language during development of the DeltaV process control system. In 1991 Blevins joined the ISA SP50 standards committee. He then became team leader for function block technology in the Interoperable Systems Project, which would lead to the development of FOUNDATION fieldbus. In 1997 he was technical consultant on Emerson's first installation of FOUNDATION fieldbus-based devices on the DeltaV system. "Terry's 30-plus years of success are due to his vision, his drive, and his focus," says Berra. "Terry's contributions to advanced control are legendary and we are extremely fortunate to have him on the Emerson team."
