Emerson expands its suite of SIS products to include its Micro Motion® Coriolis meters

Emerson's smart Safety Instrumented System solution is an extension of PlantWeb that helps customers make operations safer and more productive

Boulder, Colorado (June 21, 2004) — Changing the landscape of safety technology with its new complete-loop smart SIS solutions, Emerson Process Management has expanded its SIS sensor family by adding Micro Motion Coriolis flowmeters. Along with Rosemount® 3051S SIS pressure and 3144P SIS temperature transmitters, these meters provide smart SIS and integrate with Emerson's DeltaV™ SIS system as well as SIS final control elements like FIELDVUE® digital valve controller instruments, and expert safety services. Emerson's smart SIS safety management solution is an extension of its PlantWeb® digital plant architecture.

First in the industry to employ digital intelligence and diagnostics from sensor to logic solver to final control element, and to take an integrated complete-safety-loop approach, Emerson now also offers Coriolis meters for use in up to SIL-2 applications.

While no Coriolis meter is yet SIL/SIS certified, Emerson's Micro Motion Coriolis meters can be used in these applications by applying IEC 61511 prior-use methodology. Per Exida's FMEDA (Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostic Analysis) report, Micro Motion meters offer the best scores in SFF (Safe Failure Fraction) and DU (Dangerous Undetected failure rate), averaging two times better than other Coriolis meters.

Coriolis meters used in SIS loops offer many benefits to these applications:

  • High availability since Micro Motion Coriolis meters have no moving parts and no requirement to recalibrate

  • Lower cost of ownership because Micro Motion Coriolis meters offer diagnostics like flow calibration factor verification which allows for longer intervals between proof tests

  • Offers diversity for true redundancy. Where SIL requires redundant meters, two different technologies avoid common cause failures.

  • Lower costs of spare parts and training because customers can use a common product in their SIS and BPCS (Basic Process and Control System) loops.

Users will find Micro Motion Coriolis meters particularly advantageous in SIS applications such as low flow fuel (gas or liquid) flow to a boiler or burner; detecting dangerous composition changes via on-line density, such as critical reactor catalyst and feed flow, hazardous waste processing and incineration, and numerous other critical process control applications.

Emerson's smart SIS solutions are built from proven PlantWeb technologies that are already demonstrating their value in thousands of mainstream process automation projects around the world. The Emerson SIS solution offers automated safety loop testing and other features that increase system availability, while reducing life-cycle costs and easing regulatory compliance.
