Emerson Awarded Contract to Supply Fisher® Severe Service Control Valves for Norway’s Second Largest Gas Field
Emerson valves selected as the technical solution for demanding applications
AUSTIN, TEXAS (May 31, 2005) -- Emerson Process Management has won an order for Fisher control valves to be installed at the Ormen Lange gas processing plant at Nyhamna in Aukra municipality, Norway. The order was awarded on the basis of a unique combination of technical excellence and commercial awareness. Bjorge Solberg & Andersen, the Norwegian agent for Emerson valve products and services, will oversee the supply.
The order includes all of the plant’s control valves that have severe aerodynamic noise challenges, including export metering and gas to flare, in various sizes up to 20 inches and pressure ratings up to ANSI 2500. Fisher valve technology and an extensive range made it possible to design and implement valve solutions to meet all of the process requirements in respect of noise, flow capacity and pressure. Delivery of the valves will commence in September 2005. Estimated value of the contract to Emerson is $2 million.
In order to meet the plant’s stringent noise requirements, many of the Fisher valves to be supplied will have WhisperFlo® low noise trims. The WhisperFlo trim combines several noise reduction techniques including a unique passage shape, multistage pressure reduction, exit jet separation and an expansion area, all designed to minimize the acoustic energy radiated in the audible range. It represents the state-of-the-art solution for applications that demand the ultimate noise attenuation. A WhisperFlo cage with a correctly sized valve body can reduce noise levels by up to 40 dBA compared to standard products.
Some of the valves will have special actuator systems for quick operation and all of the valves will be equipped with FIELDVUE® instruments with advanced diagnostics capability. These can be used to identify faults such as increased friction, incorrect seating or sealing forces and non-linearity or dynamic errors. This information can be accessed locally or remotely via the network, reducing the need to access difficult locations and minimizing operator exposure to hazardous situations.
The Ormen Lange field is located in the Norwegian Sea, 120 kilometres Northwest of the coast of Møre, Mid-Norway. It is Norway’s largest gas field, and was proven through drilling by Norsk Hydro in 1997. The field will be developed with seabed installations at depths of between 800 and 1100 meters, and will be linked to the processing plant on land at Nyhamna.
From the Nyhamna plant the gas will be exported through a pipeline system to the receiving facilities at Easington, U.K. When it reaches full production, the field will meet 20 percent of the UK demand for gas.
The operator in the project phase is Norsk Hydro ASA, and the main contractor is Aker Kvaerner AS. Production start is expected in October 2007 and the operational responsibility will be taken by Shell.
