Emerson’s Water Quality Monitoring System Achieved 94 Percent Overall Accuracy, Far Greater Than Competitive Systems

Rosemount Analytical Model WQS performed unattended, with no maintenance required during the 52 day deployment, demonstrating the lowest total cost of ownership

IRVINE, Calif., March 2006 — Emerson Process Management announced that during recent verification of the Rosemount Analytical Model WQS water quality monitoring system by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ETV program, the system achieved the highest overall system accuracy rate among all evaluated technologies. The Model WQS rated an overall system accuracy performance of 94 percent, while the next nearest competitor scored an average of 85 percent. The Rosemount Analytical Model WQS multiparameter system was evaluated along with four other water monitors. Not only was the performance of the Model WQS verified by the evaluation and achieved the highest levels of system accuracy, but the system required no scheduled operator maintenance during the testing, demonstrating its lowest overall cost of ownership and appropriateness for real-world water quality monitoring.

The testing was conducted by Battelle in the advanced monitoring systems center. Battelle evaluated the performance of the Rosemount Analytical Model WQS in continuously measuring free chlorine, temperature, conductivity, pH and oxidation-reduction potential in drinking water. The testing consisted of three stages. Stage I assessed the accuracy of the measurements during nine, four-hour periods against laboratory grab samples, and the WQS achieved 84 percent system accuracy, while the next nearest competitor rated 68 percent system accuracy. Stage II reviewed response to changes in water quality by injecting contaminants (nicotine, arsenic trioxide and aldicarb) into the pipe loop. The Model WQS rated at 94 percent system accuracy during 52 days of continuous operation and the nearest competitor ranked 78% system accuracy. Stage III consisted of duplicate injections of aldicarb and E. coli. The overall system accuracy score for the Model WQS was 94 percent, while the other devices ranged from 51 percent to 85 percent.

In addition, the Model WQS requires the industry’s lowest levels of scheduled maintenance, and the system requires no expensive reagents, so it is the most cost-effective solution available.

As a participant in ETV testing, the Rosemount Analytical Model WQS was assessed in terms of its accuracy, response to injected contaminants, inter-unit reproducibility, ease of use and data acquisition. The report describing its performance during the test is now available on the ETV website (www.epa.gov/etv/centers/center1.html).”

The Model WQS multiparameter water quality monitoring system comes as a complete “plug and plumb” panel system designed to withstand the rigors of a real-world distribution environment. Not only are the sensors field-proven for long life and low maintenance requirements, but the system requires no reagents, providing the lowest cost of ownership for any solution available in the industry. The Water Quality System enables plants to establish a baseline for critical measurements including turbidity, conductivity, pH, ORP, free chlorine, monochloramine, dissolved oxygen, ozone and temperature, so that when changes in these measurements are detected, plants are alerted of an event so they can respond accordingly.
