Emerson Scientist Feng and Xu Receive ISA GTA Award
IRVINE, CALIFORNIA, (April 2, 2005) — The Rosemount Analytical, Liquid Division, of Emerson Process Management today announced that two of its technical staff,
Chang-Dong Feng and Joshua Xu, have received the third place Gilmer/Thomason/Fowler (GTF) Award at the ISA 50th Analysis Division Symposium. The award is given
annually to authors of the juried papers presented at the Symposium as determined by a committee of the three Analysis Division members. Feng and Xu's paper
"pH Independent Free Chlorine Sensor", was chosen from among 30 entries.
According to Mark Bleak, VP of Operations at Rosemount Analytical, "We are very proud of C.D. and Joshua both for their receipt of this award and for
addressing the issue of free chlorine measurement without the necessity of measuring pH. Process control professionals have had to make a choice when using
free chlorine measurement. If they wanted to do without reagents, which is a significant savings of time and money, they had to purchase a pH sensor in order
to assure that their free chlorine measurements were being taken at the same pH. This paper details a technology and methodology for eliminating the separate
pH measurement".
As the Feng and Xu paper demonstrates, elimination of the pH dependence in chlorine measurement improves the accuracy of the measurement as compared to
traditional technologies. There are reduced capital expenditures as there is one less sensor to purchase, and the long term savings are also realized since less
maintenance is required.
Chang-Dong Feng is manager of sensor technology for Rosemount Analytical Liquid Division. He was also the recipient of the GTF Award in 2001 for a paper
on the design of trace dissolved oxygen sensors. Joshua Xu is a senior chemist. Over 150 participants, mosly engineers and scientists, attended the ISA Analysis
Division Symposium, held this year in Houston.
