The History of Rosemount Inc.

Rosemount Inc. was founded in 1956 with a focus on aerospace products. The company grew quickly under the expansion of the U. S. space program.

Despite its success, the company realized in the early 1960s that instrumentation companies do not live by government contracts alone. In 1966, three years before the world saw the surface of the moon from Apollo 11, Rosemount adopted a unique diversification strategy. Hiring key executives with experience in process control instrumentation, the company used its aeronautical expertise to develop products for the processing industries.

The big breakthrough, which has transformed the company into a major international instrumentation and control supplier, came in the late 1960s. At that time, Rosemount coupled its significant improvements in 4–20 mA electronics for industrial applications with the temperature and pressure sensor expertise gained while developing products for the aerospace industry.

One of the outcomes of this merging of technologies was the Model 411, a new temperature transmitter introduced in 1967. It eventually evolved into the Model 444, which is now the best-selling temperature transmitter in the world. In 1969, Rosemount introduced the Model 1151, which has become the standard in pressure transmitters, by combining 4–20 mA — electronics with capacitance technology.

The reliability of Rosemount transmitters was, and still is, the element that sealed the company's success in the industrial market. Rosemount ensures the reliability of its products by applying the same rigid standards used to make U.S. space program equipment to their process transmitters. Because of this commitment, many customers still use the Model 1151 transmitters they purchased over 20 years ago.

As the company's growth continued, Rosemount gained the attention of several billion-dollar conglomerates seeking high-tech acquisitions, one of which was Emerson Electric Company. Realizing that being acquired was inevitable, and that a friendly merger is better than an unfriendly takeover, Rosemount Inc. responded to Emerson, which had a reputation of granting a good share of independence to its subsidiaries. A merger was negotiated and became effective in August 1976.

With the acquisition, Emerson set in motion a plan to build the world's largest instrumentation and control system company through internal research and development efforts and strategic acquisitions. Rosemount became the cornerstone of this strategy.

During the next 10 years, Rosemount and Emerson acquired other companies to complement their strengths. The key objective was to make strategic acquisitions of other companies who were leaders in their own right. For instance, in 1979, Rosemount acquired Uniloc as a first step in becoming a leader in process analytical instrumentation. In 1984, Emerson acquired Micro Motion, Inc., a pioneer in Coriolis flow measurement.

In 1986, Emerson formally brought together its instrument companies to form an organization that could truly provide customers with more solutions than any other instrumentation and control system company in the world. This organization responded with explosive growth, doubled revenues again, and became a billion-dollar company in 1989.

In October, 1993, Emerson finalized the acquisition of Fisher Controls International, Inc., and the subsequent creation of Fisher-Rosemount. The combination of Fisher Controls and Rosemount Inc., brought together control, measurement, analytical, and valve capabilities that are a perfect compliment to lead the industry into a new and enabling technology-real-time process management. Today, Fisher-Rosemount is one of the largest instrumentation and control companies in the world, with sales, service, and manufacturing operations in more than 80 countries around the globe.

The Measurement Leader

Rosemount Measurement transmitters, sensors, flowmeters, and tank gauging systems prove themselves every day for more than 85,000 customers in 75 countries.

Rosemount has developed technology and designed products to fill virtually every process measurement need. And the company has complemented those products with a tradition of manufacturing innovations, a network of state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, and a world-class sales and support service—all to help manufacturers manage their process better.

A Critical Success

In today's economy, every facet of the process is critical. Gaining control over every element demands timely and accurate information. In fact, the difference between having this information and not having it can mean the difference between success and failure.

No process instrumentation supplier understands this better than Rosemount Measurement. That's why no process instrumentation supplier is better equipped to help customers manage their process better.

The Capabilities Leader

Rosemount Measurement designs, manufactures and markets a broad range of pressure, temperature, flow and level instruments.

Rosemount Measurement products include a line of pressure transmitters designed to meet every conceivable pressure-based application, a highly regarded group of temperature transmitters, a broad offering of magnetic and vortex flowmeters, and highly accurate tank gauging systems.

This family of products includes a full line of microprocessor-based instruments known as the Rosemount SMART FAMILY®, which uses the HART protocol, the world's most widely accepted communications protocol.

Reliable and Precise

Rosemount product quality is based on a tradition of adhering to the rigid quality and safety standards set by the U.S. Air Force and NASA, for which the company created its first temperature sensor in 1956.

This tradition of quality continued with the industry-standard Model 1151 Pressure Transmitter, of which there are now over four million installed worldwide.

And Rosemount continues to be the leader in sensor technology by building on its pressure reputation with the high-performance Model 3051 Smart Pressure Transmitter.

Rosemount Measurement recognizes customer needs for the highest quality at the lowest possible cost. That's why, over the years, the company has built the most reliable, durable, accurate, and repeatable instruments in the world.

For reliable measurement that can help you manage your process better day after day, put your trust in instruments built by people who care about every step of the process. Put your trust in Rosemount.
