The Rosemount Model 8800 Handles Vibration and Clogging Problems in Polyester Fiber Production

PTA and Mother Liquor Flow Measurement
Purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is used to produce polyester fibers, film, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle resins. PTA is produced by passing slurries of terephthalic acid through a catalyst at elevated temperatures to remove the undesired impurities. The PTA is then crystallized and filtered out, resulting in a separate "mother liquor" flow.

The mother liquor is a low-viscosity fluid with light solids. The production of PTA requires precise measurement of mother liquor flows at wide-ranging flowrates.

The Vortex Flowmeter Solution
The process to measure mother liquor in polyester fiber and PET production requires precise flow measurement and wide rangeability. The vortex flowmeter has the necessary precision. However, customer experience has demonstrated that not all vortex flowmeters are created equal.

The Rosemount Model 8800 Solution
A customer initially installed a competitor's vortex flowmeters to measure mother liquor flow and encountered two problems. The main problem was an unstable output signal due to the effects of vibration. The flowmeters also had clogging around the sensing mechanism, impairing the meters. The customer had to remove and clean them every week.

The customer switched to another competitor's vortex flowmeters to address the problems caused by vibration. On these flowmeters however, the ports on the shedder bar clogged and had to be removed and cleaned every two weeks. Each of the 21 flowmeters took an hour and a half to clean, which meant that more than a full day of production time was lost.

The customer then turned to Rosemount to address the vibration and clogging problems. The Rosemount Model 8800 Vortex flowmeters were installed. The Model 8800’s all-welded, nonclogging design and its superior immunity to vibration solved the customer’s problems. Since installation nearly three years ago, all 21 Model 8800 Vortex flowmeters have performed flawlessly. No maintenance or cleaning has been required. There are no more daylong downtimes in the process. Profits increased and the headaches of constant maintenance disappeared.

Rosemount’s innovative design—which eliminates ports and crevices—combined with mass balancing and adaptive digital signal processing, makes the Model 8800 Vortex flowmeter the clear choice for continued value.
