Applying the Rosemount Model 3095MV™
on a Gas Lift

3095mvgas.jpg (6306 bytes)The Rosemount Model 3095MV™ is a Multi-variable mass flow meter which measures differential pressure, pressure, and temperature. These measurements, along with information about the process fluid, are used by an internal flow computer to calculate the mass flow rate of the process fluid. This measurement and calculation result in an accuracy better than 1% of rate over a range in flow rates of 8:1. The mass flow rate and each individual measurement (DP, P, and T) are available as digital or analog 4-20 mA signals.

Gas Lift
Many oil wells require an artificial means to assist in the oil recovery. Gas lift works by high-pressure continuously injecting relatively natural gas into the well to reduce the flow gradient. The gas aerates the crude, reducing its weight which allows it to flow to a production separator on the surface. A gas lift takes advantage of the well’s produced gas energy. It is a popular technique in off-shore wells where space is at a premium or a high amount of solids (sand) are present. Automation systems help to increase oil production, reduce compressed gas consumption, and more efficiently use manpower.

Flow Measurement
The measurement of the gas flow into the well for gas lift applications is critical to provide an optimal economic payback. Each well has its own unique characteristics and therefore a unique optimal flow rate. As gas flow to the well is increased the pressure at the bottom of the well falls off rapidly due to the reduction of the gradient; however, as gas is increased further the pressure decreases much less and the curve becomes almost flat. As additional gas is injected, oil production will actually decrease as the gas displaces oil in the well bore. Further addition will increase pressure due to friction loss and actually reduce production.

gasgraph.gif (8835 bytes)Measuring the mass of gas flowing into the well increases a producers’ ability to improve efficiency of the overall operation. A cubic foot (volume) of gas at the surface is not the same as a cubic foot of gas in the formation due to changes in temperature and pressure. The 3095MV will measure the actual standard cubic feet of gas, which will be the same amount (mass) of gas at any operating pressure and temperature. This allows a producer to distribute and inject a much more precise amount of gas to the formation as conditions above and below ground change. The exact amount of gas at each compressor and well head can be accurately measured using the 3095MV.

The 3095MV can help to optimize gas lift operations by significantly improving measurement accuracy and simplifying installation, with one compact device that accurately measures and computes mass flow rates
