Emerson Process
Management was requested by Conoco Phillips to provide instrumentation engineering
and design for their refinery in Woodriver, IL. Emerson has completed numerous
projects of various sizes for this refinery. Small projects include tank upgrades,
asphalt blending improvement, sulfur pit controls relocation, cooling tower pH
addition, boiler feed water re-instrumentation, and air preheater modernization.
An example of a larger project is the development of engineering/design plans
for a Cat Cracker re-instrumentation project. Emerson was selected because
of its design capabilities and previous experience with re-instrumentation projects.

- Worked with the process unit engineering and operations personnel to develop
the scope of work.
- Generated estimates for engineering/design, installed
costs, labor and material.
- Developed a construction package consisting
of design drawings, specifications, and scope of work.
- Provided procurement,
construction QAQC and checkout.
Major Projects
- Developed engineering/design plans for a Cat Cracker Re-instrumentation project
execution. The first objective was to replace existing pneumatic, electronic single-loop
instrumentation, PLC and relay-based shutdown systems with a DCS and safety system.
The second objective was to relocate operators to a central refinery control building.
The project scope consisted of working with multiple vendors, contractors, and
refinery support groups in order to accomplish these objectives.
- Emerson
was the Control Systems Engineering owners rep for an ULSD project developing
an FEL. Emerson worked on site, in conjunction with a major engineering firm,
to develop a Front End Loading instrumentation and electrical project scope.
