Refining Success Story

INSTRUMENT ENGINEERING & DESIGN
Conoco Phillips - WoodRiver, IL

Emerson Process Management was requested by Conoco Phillips to provide instrumentation engineering and design for their refinery in Woodriver, IL. Emerson has completed numerous projects of various sizes for this refinery. Small projects include tank upgrades, asphalt blending improvement, sulfur pit controls relocation, cooling tower pH addition, boiler feed water re-instrumentation, and air preheater modernization. An example of a larger project is the development of engineering/design plans for a Cat Cracker re-instrumentation project.

Emerson was selected because of its design capabilities and previous experience with re-instrumentation projects. Further project details follow.

Small Projects
  • Worked with the process unit engineering and operations personnel to develop the scope of work.
  • Generated estimates for engineering/design, installed costs, labor and material.
  • Developed a construction package consisting of design drawings, specifications, and scope of work.
  • Provided procurement, construction QAQC and checkout.

Major Projects

  • Developed engineering/design plans for a Cat Cracker Re-instrumentation project execution. The first objective was to replace existing pneumatic, electronic single-loop instrumentation, PLC and relay-based shutdown systems with a DCS and safety system. The second objective was to relocate operators to a central refinery control building. The project scope consisted of working with multiple vendors, contractors, and refinery support groups in order to accomplish these objectives.
  • Emerson was the Control Systems Engineering owners rep for an ULSD project developing an FEL. Emerson worked on site, in conjunction with a major engineering firm, to develop a Front End Loading instrumentation and electrical project scope.
