What Is A Valve Actuator? |
|
Shafer®'s principal product is a valve actuator, which is mounted on the
stem of a pipeline valve. Valve actuators are devices which permit the
valve to be opened or closed automatically by either an internal
self-generated signal or a remote, hydraulic, electric or pneumatic
signal. Valve actuators are used on the piping of compressors, metering
and regulating stations, distribution systems or transmission lines,
refineries and petrochemical, gasoline and power plants and for certain
marine applications.
Shafer®
valve actuators are used primarily in the gas transmission
pipeline industry, where reliability is critical. Hence, Shafer®
has
become recognized as "guardians of the world's pipelines." We
have valve actuators in service in Siberia, the Andes Mountains, the
floor of the ocean off the coast of Spain, and on long lines like the
TransCanada pipeline. All of the valves on this 2,000-mile length of
pipeline could be operated from a single location!

Company
History |
|
Pipeline technology was in its infancy when Jack Shafer founded the
Shafer Valve Company in 1946. In those early days, the consequences of
equipment failure could be disastrous. Then, as now, rugged, dependable
valve actuators were essential to the safety of pipeline systems and
Shafer®, from the beginning, became known as the company to turn to for
the most critical applications in the world. Jack Shafer established the
philosophy upon which the company was founded: "Product reliability can
never be sacrificed for cost concessions in materials, manufacturing or
design. The consequences of product failure are much too great." This
commitment to product excellence and reliability continues to serve our
customers today.

Shafer®
Valve Operating Systems are sold worldwide for a vast number of
applications, with export business accounting for 42% of the company's
sales since 1980.
Oil & Natural Gas: Shafer®
valve control applications begin with oil
field and gas wells then continue through the pipeline transmission and
distribution networks and refineries. Shafer®
is especially recognized
for critical applications such as emergency shutdown and linebreak
protection. Shafer®
also pioneered valve control products capable of
withstanding the demands offshore platforms and subsea pipelines, along
with a variety of specific marine applications.
Process Industries: Shafer®
has developed valve actuators specifically to
meet the requirements of the process industries such as pulp & paper,
chemical, food & beverage, water & waste water, power and mining. Our
products are often specified in the highly demanding valve control and
priority shut-off applications in these industries.

R&D,
Engineering, Manufacturing |
|
Research and development represents our investment in the future. Many
of our new products and the refinement of existing products are based
upon concepts generated by our customers. Listening to customer
concerns, and responding with engineered product solutions means
Shafer®'s development and improvement objectives are always
"market-driven." Because product quality and reliability begin at the
drawing board, Shafer®
products are continuously evaluated to ensure that
the most current technology and materials are applied, using the latest
computer aided tools.
Shafer's manufacturing facility and headquarters are located in
Mansfield, Ohio, USA. The company manufactures virtually all of the
metal components needed in its valve actuators from raw steel stock,
which affords Shafer®
the opportunity to control technology,
craftsmanship and quality. Because our products require exacting
tolerances and zero defect components, every phase of production uses
state-of-the-art equipment and highly-trained personnel. Shafer®
was
certified under the ISO 9001 quality standard in March of 1993. This
certification is not only important to export sales, it serves to
solidify Shafer®'s market reputation for excellence.
